Forteresse de Salses, Pyrénées-Orientales (66), Langudeoc-Roussillon, France. Salses-Le-Château (Salses fortress) was built between 1497 and 1504 by the Spanish. A rare example of the transition between medieval castle and the fortresses of the modern period. Salses has semi-subterranean features, making it hard to see from ground level, and a maze of passageways.
