Satellite galaxies at edge of Milky Way coexist with dark matter

The Large Magelanic Cloud is a well-known satellite or dwarf galaxy that closely orbits the Milky Way and is visible in Earth’s southern hemisphere.

Elliptical Galaxy | New Observations of Giant Elliptical Galaxy Centaurus A

Inner structural features seen in this image are helping scientists to understand the mechanisms and interactions within the galaxy, as are the jets seen extending over thousands of light years from the black hole believed to be at its heart.

In its 19 years of operation, the Hubble Space Telescope has revealed the universe to us in all its beauty and mystery. Among thousands of images, these are some of the most memorable

The so-called Cat’s Eye Nebula has more than a passing resemblance to the eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings. The nebula is formally cataloged as NGC and is one of the most complex such nebulae seen in space.

M2-9: Wings of a Butterfly Nebula. In the case of low-mass stars like our Sun and M2-9, the stars transform themselves from normal stars to white dwarfs by casting off their outer gaseous envelopes. The expended gas frequently forms an impressive display called a planetary nebula that fades gradually over thousand of years. M2-9 is 2100 light-years away. In the center, two stars orbit inside a gaseous disk 10 times the orbit of Pluto.

Behold the planetary nebula, aka Minkowski’s Butterfly, aka the Wings of a Butterfly Nebula, aka the Twin Jet Nebula. Discovered by Rudolph Minkowski in resides rougly light-years away from Earth towards the constellation Ophiuchus.
