IVORY CARVING:  Diptych of Anastasius, consul in 517. In Late Antiquity a consular diptych was a particular type of diptych (a pair of linked panels, generally in ivory, wood or metal and decorated with rich sculpted decoration) which could function as a writing tablet but was also intended as a deluxe commemorative object, commissioned by a consul ordinarius and then distributed to reward those who had supported his candidature as rewards and to mark his entry to that post.

Roger of Salerno (1180-1209) Wrote in his book 'Chirurgia' on the treatment of wounds to the jugular vein:  'If a wound made by a sword or similar weapon cuts the jugular vein, treat it as follows: Take up the whole vein with the needle, but so that it is not perforated; from the other side draw the needle with the attached thread, binding it with the thread and tightening so that no blood flows. Do this from above and below. Apply a wet cloth to the wound.'

Des fragments provenant du même diptyque sont conservés aux musées de Berlin, Munich et Nevers, l'ivoire de l'Ascension de Munich pouvant constituer l'une des parties centrales.
