The Guam rail is endemic to Guam. In the 1950s, brown tree snakes were introduced, and they began eating rails' eggs and young. The Guam rail population declined to 21 by 1985. The last wild Guam rails were captured and placed in captive breeding programs. Releases of rails on the island Rota, 31 miles away, have had little success. More recently, others were released in Guam, in a 22-hectare fenced-off area where the snakes had been removed. Sounds attributed to chicks have been reported…
