Lizard Buzzard - Kaupifalco monogrammicus.  This is one of the prettiest little hawks.   Although it goes under the name of  Lizard Buzzard it sits  with the Cuckoo Hawk and Pygmy Falcon in the field guides.   The long black strip down the middle of the throat is diagnostic. I first saw this fellow at Bonomanzi in Zululand standing proud and showing himself off at the edge of the sand forest.  Photograph by Chris Krog

Today I learned about the Potoo, a nocturnal bird that resides in Central and South America.

The nocturnal Potoo of Central America is nature's most surprised looking bird. In his treatment of the family in the Handbook of the Birds of the World, Cohn-Haft describes the potoos as "little more than a flying mouth and eyes".
