Tibetan horse by Lugu Lake. This breed has been bred pure for thousands of years. Remains of it were found in the excavation of Kanuo, which date back to 4,000 years. They were often sent as gifts to Chinese emperors – although stock was rarely brought back to the plateau. More recently attempts have been made to improve the breed, however they are specifically adapted high altitude areas and crosses were unsuccessful. Crossbreds do not survive at such an altitude.
