LATE BYZANTINE ARCHITECTURE - Plan of Basilica San Marco, Venice, Italy, 1071. It's believed that the current S. Marko has adopted its original Greek cross plan. The central dome of S. Marko covers the intersection of four subspace, each with its own dome. The scheme design is a version of a Byzantine quincunx, similar to that of the Church of the Holy Apostles from 546 in Constantinople which no longer survived.

The plan of the Basilica is not based on a Roman basilica, because the Basilica of Constantine has a transverse vestibule (narthex) and there is no column inside the cella. This feature is used later in church architecture, for example in the design of s. Peter's in Rome which was built by Constantine some years later.
