In the fall and winter, chickens typically spend more time inside and might become bored. Provide birds with something to keep their minds busy. Look for toys and treats for chickens that bring out their natural instincts.
Chickens need roosts in the coop because that’s where they sleep. • Provide about 9 inches of roost space per bird. • Separate roosts from each other by about 1 foot. You can make roosts from 2x4s, sturdy branches or other natural materials. If you use sawed lumber, round the corners with a router or plane to make it easier on the birds' feet. Avoid metal or plastic roosts as they can get slippery in the winter and metal can get cold and cause frostbite.
