This morning our usual breakfast of bread and pastries is supplemented with custard apple (“anona” in Portuguese). It comes straight from Dominic’s farm and today is the harvest day. It is our first encounter with this fruit, which is sweet, fragrant and very exotic. After the breakfast we pack our bags, say our goodbyes and drive east for our first levada walk. Levadas are irrigation channels, built to bring water from the rainy northwest of the island to the more …

Thanks to the storm bearing a charming, and very adequate, name of Abigail (a-big-gale), the weather in Scotland has been dreadful in the past week. Tired of the constant wind and rain, today we decided to share some photos from our trip to Ayr beach a couple of weeks ago, when the weather was still nice and sunny. Ayr is a town on the shores of Firth of Clyde, on the Scottish west coast, about an hour drive from Glasgow. …

After all the trekking and mountaineering adventures, we wanted the last stop of our Ecuadorian trip to be something (relatively) easy and relaxing. I also wanted to see a different kind of tropical forest – the misty and mysterious Andean cloud forest. Luckily one doesn’t have to travel far from Quito to get to the heart of the cloud forest; two hours by bus takes us from the dusty suburbs of Quito to the village of Nanegal, surrounded by lush, …
