When war was declared on 4 August 1914, Britain’s need to increase its modest army posed a huge challenge. Secretary of State for War Lord Kitchener quickly recognised that overwhelming manpower was key to winning the war, and promptly set about looking for ways to encourage men of all walks of society to enlist.
