Similar to the British Livens Projector, the German Gaswurfminen was a simple mortar-like weapon for launching chemical shells. Consisting of a steel tube and an explosive charge set off by an electric current, the weapon could throw a chemical shell almost 2km. Over eight hundred of these were used against the Italian Army at the Battle of Caporetto, Nov 1917.

The first stretcher bearer is wearing a form of cap comforter over his field cap. The rear bearer is wearing another form of cap comforter in place of his field cap. The two other men are from an Alpine unit, probably the Edelweiss Division, and the man on the left is of Warrant Officer rank.
