During the Civil War, it was very rare to find a woman sitting idly without knitting something for "the boys" on either side of the war. Wool socks were always in demand. When hospitals received shipments of them, it was a common practice to first give socks to those with one foot or leg amputated, thereby doubling the reach of their supply.

I have never been part of a quilting bee and that makes me so sad. Maybe one day. [I love how interested the little boys are.]

Montgomery White Sulphur Springs Resort. During the Civil War the resort was ran by the Confederate Government as a General Hospital. Wounded, sick, and recovery soldiers filled the spacious resort and were cared for by Catholic Nuns, local slaves, and military personnel. More that 200 soldiers died at the hospital and are MOSTLY BURIED IN UNMARKED GRAVES...post-war years it was destroyed by a flash flood...WOULD BE A GOOD PLACE TO DO SOME GPR/ARCH SURVEYS!
