Kava pounding - Nacula, Western- Fiji - It is customary to bring a gift to the chief of the island village when visiting his village. The customary gift is a kava root. Kava, is the Fijian national drink, and is a very mild narcotic. Drinking Kava in excess causes drowsiness at most. Nonetheless, it is a cultural experience not to be missed. In this picture, the kava root is being pounded into a powder so that it can brewed into water to make the kava drink.
