Built in the United States, she made her maiden flight on September 4, 1923. Designed by Karl Arnstein, her 680ft-long profile was heavily based on the German L-49 "height climber" zeppelin (shot down in France in 1917). The Shenandoah has a distinction of being the world's first airship filled with helium.
