Soldiers working on a locomotive, 1945.  I don't know exactly why soldiers would've been working on a locomotive---such machinery was not in our arsenal at the time.  Regardless, that was a coal-powered steam engine used by CN and two other railroads, collectively sharing the expense of development with the manufacturer.  At the same time, diesel-powered electric engines were beginning to become affordable, due to being powerful and considerably lighter in weight.

Pioneer Zephyr.  The complete train is preserved perfectly and lives at the Chicago Museum of History and Industry.  I've seen it and can't wait to return.  Amazing train!
