The new North Pole police chief has become something of a department historian in his first six months on the job.  In a department that has little institutional memory because of high employee turnover, new chief Steve Dutra said he turned to old, somewhat spotty, police records to make his plans for the future of the department. Gnarled logs and brawny stumps are scattered throughout the woods, filling sheds and piled beneath overhangs. Sunday night at Hering Auditorium in Fairbanks, he is directing a small group of eager teenagers from Healy, who are learning the fine art of sound. Bennett is enjoying the more relaxed pace.
