Zedekiah Belknap was born in Auburn (formerly Ward), Massachusetts in 1781. He graduated from Dartmouth College, where he studied divinity. Belknap became an itinerant artist painting portraits of residents of towns and villages in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
