Melozzo da Forli, The sacristy of San Marco in the Basilica della Santa Casa in Loreto, 1477-1480
Sacra Casa di Maria nel santuario della Madonna di Loreto
December 10, not on universal calendar: Lady of Loreto: Feast of the Translation of the Holy House of Loreto
#3. This painting was done by Raphael and is called "Madonna of Loreto". In order to get an understanding of the true meaning behind this work of art, you must use context. The veil that the woman (Madonna) is holding over the child symbolizes the veil that baby Jesus was wrapped in when in the nativity and then later during his crucifixion. The man in the background, probably Joseph, is looking after the child and seems as though he will guide him through out his life.
