Banpo Village is a Neolithic site in the Yellow River Valley, east of Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, in the People's Republic of China. The site is also referred to as Pan Po, especially by writers in the late 1950's CE.  It was discovered in 1953 CE by workers hired to dig up the ground to build a factory. The Neolithic Shimao Ruins in China encompass an imperial city, and inner and outer cities. Remains of palaces, houses, tombs, sacrificial altars, and handicraft workshops are scattered around the site. The dig began in 2011, and archaeologists have made discoveries dating back over 4,000 years, redefining China's history of building city walls. Jade knives and other objects have also been unearthed.

The neolithic Shimao Ruins are believed to be the biggest prehistoric city ruins found in China.

One of the most interesting is the base of a dedication by one Klearchos, perhaps the known student of Aristotle, that records his bringing to this new Greek city, Alexandria on the Oxus, the traditional maxims from the shrine of Apollo at Delphi concerning the five ages of man.

It is believed one of the locations identified for prospection may have been the site of a shipwreck during Roman times, due to the discovery of a large concentration of amphora, some still intact.
