Old Slave House (Crenshaw House) The Crenshaw House was a "station" on the Reverse Underground Railroad that transported escaped slaves and kidnapped free blacks back into servitude in slave states. It is thought John Crenshaw operated a secret slave jail for kidnapped free blacks and captured runaway slaves on the third floor.
Mordington, Frederica. The old Mordington mansion is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a slave girl known only as "Tom's Daughter". According to the legend, she was locked away in the attic after refusing the advances of her owner. She leapt to her death from the window to escape. Her screams as she fell can still be heard in the house. The mansion is south of Frederica on Canterbury Rd.
The Crenshaw House (also known as the Crenshaw Mansion, Hickory Hill or, most commonly, The Old Slave House) is a historic former residence and alleged haunted house located in Gallatin County, Illinois. Built by John Crenshaw in 1842, it was known that Crenshaw would kidnap and torture people, and then chain them up as slaves. Many spirits are known to wander the place to this day.
