The 24th Michigan lost more killed and wounded than any Union regiment at Gettysburg. It went into Gettysburg on July 1st with 496 men and officers. On the morning of July 2nd only 99 men answered roll. While the Iron Brigade officially continued after Gettysburg it was a shadow of it's former self. For all practical purposes the Iron Brigade died at Gettysburg. All told monuments to four of the five regiments of the Iron Brigade reside in the McPherson Woods.
