Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands: is a city located in the south. It was built on a place where two types of soil meet: Zoom refers to the border of sandy soil and marine clay and bergen means mountains or hills. It was one of the strategic points held by the Dutch during their revolt in the Eighty Years War. I passed through it on a bicycle tour of Holland in 1989 but already had been though on the train several times. It is beautiful place and typically Dutch.
Joulupukki (Julebok, Christmas goat) During Jule celebrations a person dressed as a goat in a goatskin would burst in upon the party and during the course of evening would "die" and return to life. Some still keep a Julebok under the tree for good luck.
