Yinka Shonibare, over the past decade, has become well known for his exploration of colonialism and post-colonialism within the contemporary context of globalisation. He explores race and class, through painting, sculpture, photography and film and performance. He examines the construction of identity and tangled interrelationship between Africa and Europe and their respective economic and political histories. He asks what constitutes our collective contemporary identity today.
Incredibly honored to have commissioned by the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art to design awards for her first African Art Award. Congratulations to my fellow artists and friends Ato Melinda and Yinka Shonibare, as well as the Ford Foundation.
