Botanical/Floral
John Edwards made large prints for A Collection of Flowers (London 1783-95). Some types are quite suited to his printmaking technique, such as the broad, smooth petals of these tulips. Soft-ground etching plates print areas of tone, not lines: therefore the print describes the form of flowers and leaves without cross-hatching. Inking this tonal etching in pale green, not black, allows for the clarity and realism of the hand-coloring.
