August 7 - Lighthouse Day - Today, our friends across the pond are celebrating Lighthouse Day! On August through an Act of Congress, the Federal Government took over responsibility for building and operating American lighthouses.

The KHERSONES (Russian: Херсонес) is a Ukrainian three-mast tall ship, a full rigged ship. She is seen here on the River Mersey on June 12, 2005 during the Mersey River Festival Parade of Sail.   The ship was built in 1989 in Gdańsk Shipyard, Poland, in a series of six sister ships (among which also the Mir), after the designs of Zygmunt Choreń. The ship is named after the city of Kherson on the North coast of the Black Sea.

The frigate Shtandart (Russian: Штандартъ) was the first ship of Russia's Baltic fleet. Her keel was laid on April 24, 1703 at the Olonetsky shipyard near Olonets by the decree of Tsar Peter I and orders issued by commander Aleksandr Menshikov.
