Fern Grove - On the backside of Timpanogos, there are sections where ferns grow in the aspens. These ferns turn a nice shade of brown in the autumn. It looks like it might be an early fall this year. I've already seen lots of trees changing color on my high elevation mountain bike rides.

Fields of yellow look surreal against the backdrop of autumn trees and crisp blue sky...actually a field of wispy, fern-like asparagus which turns yellow in the autumn!

The fern leaf maple (Acer aconitifolium, above) changes color early, but the leaves hang on long after most other trees have gone bare. This is perhaps the most spectacular of trees in my garden for autumn color, with parts of the tree turning dark red, others yellow, or orange, and some sections with a mix of all. In mid November the leaves are beginning to drop, but half of the tree remains in blazing full color.

Ferns number of different ferns turn shades of red, orange, gold, and tan in fall. Their lacy texture is a great contrast to bolder shrubs and trees with bright autumn shades. Some of the best selections for fall include sensitive fern, ostrich fern, and royal fern.

Autumn Fern Dryopteris Erythrosora, provides a new color with every season. It is one of the showiest ferns as the fronds emerge in the spring with copper-bronze color tones. It then turns to dark green for summer, and back to bronze again in the fall. Autumn Fern has an evergreen habit that looks great in the partly-shaded bed or border. This fern reaches 2 feet in height and width. Will grow happily beneath large shade trees or in dry soils. Use in pots indoors or for a patio or deck…
