The Mont St Michel Castle is situated on a granite outcropping on the Normandy coast of France. During high tide, the island is almost completely separated from the mainland. Only a narrow causeway built in the 1880's, links it to the coast. Many tourists have drowned trying to cross the bay when the tide rushes in.
