The construction of the Maunsell gun towers- also known as Red Sands- in 1943. They were built to defend the UK from the German Navy and Luftwaffe, and were placed seven miles off the coast of Whitstable, Kent.
Maunsell Sea forts (2). In the midst of WWII, London was the busiest port in the world. German Navy wanted to destroy London supply by closing entrance to the Thames river. They tried to do damage to the British with the magnetic influence mines. Hundreds of ships were lost, and the anti-Hitler coalition, had to find a solution. Knowing that the mines were dropped in the sea from irplanes, Guy Mansell (1884-1961), a British engineer, created a plan for coastal protection. Maunsell Sea Forts
