Chaim Soutine portrait of Paulette 1924. Soutine went to Bonnard for advice on layering paint to create a richer finish. In this painting Soutine committed the fundamental error of working on the painting before the surface had fully dried out. Once the picture was complete the layers of paint contracted at different rates and the surface fractured like a dried-up riverbed.
