Mustang Island State Park offers visitors access to 5 miles of shoreline fronting the Gulf of Mexico. Camping, kayaking, fishing, surfing, swimming, birding and beach combing are all popular activities. The Mustang Island area is renowned for the number of sand dollars found along the tide line.
Assateagues - We used to see them running around while vacationing in OC, MD. The wild ponies of Assateague are a favorite of visitors. Thousands visit the area each year just to see them. Assateague is a wild and beautiful barrier island with miles of beach, sand dunes and marsh to explore.
Oswald West, between Manzanita and Cannon Beach. You are required to walk 1/4 mile through an ancient forest, along a river path, before you reach the beach. If you are a fan of mossy tree stumps, like me, this is the place to go.
Fort Macon offers public access to the surf, sun and sand of the Crystal Coast—as well as a historic landmark. Located at the eastern end of Bogue Banks, one of a series of barrier islands along the North Carolina coast, the park is surrounded on three sides by water—the Atlantic Ocean, Beaufort Inlet and Bogue Sound. This area of undisturbed natural beauty is the perfect place to explore salt marshes and estuaries vital to the coastal ecosystem. The park is also home to a Civil War fort.
