This particular specimen belongs to UCL Pathology Collections, and is currently on display in the Foreign Bodies exhibition. The anonymous woman patient underwent a hysterectomy most likely sometime in the early 20th century, in order to remove the sizable uterine fibroid, which can be seen on the right side of the image. However, on closer examination of the image, we see on the left side a preserved fetus, frozen in development, somewhere between 8-11 weeks.
The Italian Colloredo brothers were favorites at the court of Charles I of England. Lazarus was a handsome & popular man, but his attached brother was little more than an unconscious dangling entity. Lazarus would walk the streets with his voluminous cloak draped over his brother so as not to cause unwanted attention. At other times, Lazarus would invite spectators to pinch his brother to hear him cry out with involuntary nonverbal protestations. This cruel behavior was a popular pastime.
