This adorable dog is more like a Bear. As in a Teddy Bear! An Australian Shepherd mix, one to two-year-old Bear was found as a stray on April 2nd. He was taken to the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina. A dog this cute would usually be adopted or pulled by a rescue in a heartbeat. But the heart of his problem was testing heartworm positive, which meant that at this shelter his adoption was not an option. A rescue would be needed to save Bear.

Missy is “Sissy” to her brother Ghost, and each says the other will be missed the most when they go to their forever homes. Surrendered to the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina on May 24th, this pair almost didn’t make it out of the shelter alive. These Labrador Retriever mixes are seniors at eight years of age; they are black dogs; they are both heartworm positive; and they both had to be out by June 1st or be euthanized due to a seizure of 30 dogs in a hoarding case.

There were high hopes for Maurice. But sometimes things take an unexpected wrong turn. Maurice is a two to three-year-old Mountain Cur mix. He arrived as stray on May 1st at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. Like so many dogs in the Carolinas, Maurice tested heartworm positive. This greatly lessened the likelihood of him being adopted or rescued and greatly increased the likelihood of him being euthanized.

What would you call a new shirt for this dog? Yes, a New Jersey! A two-year-old Catahoula -Shepherd mix, Jersey arrived on December 13th at the Darlington County Humane Society shelter in South Carolina. He was one of three large dogs surrendered that day by the same person who said that he had too many dogs. Despite being in good shape and otherwise healthy, Jersey was heartworm positive. That was bad news for a big dog in a small and crowded rural shelter.

"Beam me up, Scotty!" Or in this case, it was Scotty who was beamed out of the shelter and into a rescue, and in the process landed in a forever home! Three to four years old and a Carolina Dog mix, Scotty was surrendered, along with 11 other dogs and numerous cats, to the Aiken County Animal Shelter in South Carolina on February 11th when his elderly owner was hospitalized. The animals had been living in unsanitary conditions and without all the proper care they needed. Scotty was one of…

Little Quincy is RADAR's first Schipperke mix. This is a Belgian breed that was originally used as watchdogs on boats, which accounts for the name pronunciation: "Skipper-kee." Six-year-old Quincy might also have some Chihuahua in his mix. He arrived as a stray on October 1st at the Vance County Animal Control shelter in North Carolina. While Quincy had a great personality, he also had his share of problems: his walking was a little off balance, he had a few patches of thin hair, and he was…

"Help Us!" is the banner that Banner and his canine companion, Johnson, needed after their second arrival at the Sampson County Animal Shelter in North Carolina on November 4th. Three-year-old Banner and one-year-old Johnson, both Labrador Retriever-Hound-mixes were strays taken to the shelter on October 29th. It almost seemed too good to be true when they were both adopted together. And indeed it was. When both dogs tested heartworm positive, back to the shelter they went...

Poor Percy was in need of some mercy. On August 20th this one to two-year-old Labrador Retriever entered the Mercer County Animal Shelter in West Virginia as a stray. Percy was a very nice dog who got along with other dogs, but he faced a more uncertain future than many dogs at the shelter because he was black. No one showed any interest in him. With the shelter full, by August 25th Percy was third in line to be euthanized at any time.
