Informed by its 90,000 sq m desert site, Zaha Hadid has envisioned the headquarters as a fleet of sweeping ‘sand dunes’ orientated to optimise the prevailing Shamal winds and limit the quantity of glazing exposed to the harsh sun. Two primary dunes intersect and connect via a central courtyard ‘oasis’ inside the building – a feature that’s designed to enhance natural ventilation and channel indirect sunlight into the building's cathedral-like interiors.

Since Dubai is a desert, a wind tower, called barjeel, is in every house of Al Bastakiya. More the number of barjeels in a house, the wealthier the owner. Keeping the orthodox cultural tradition in mind... the main doors of the houses are large but the inner door is short. Because as an man enters the house they should bend down not facing women directly. Also, a sign to respect privacy :)
