Captain Catesby Jones, commander of the CSS VIRGINIA. After Flag Officer Buchanan suffered a wound on the battle's first day, March 8, 1862, Captain Jones assumed command of the James River Squadron and fought the MONITOR. Buchanan, having been taken to a hospital ashore, was not present during this historic clash between ironclads.
