September "New York. Looking downtown from the Third Avenue elevated railway in the 'Fifties'." A platform on the long-vanished El. Medium format nitrate negative by Marjory Collins for the Office of War Information. Vintage b&w NYC photo.
A returning WWII veteran captured an extraordinary photographic record of postwar NYC
Park Avenue and street. The photographer, Peter Baab, captured what he called "the march of improvement." New row houses and mansions began to overrun the old factories, squatter homes, and farmhouses that once dominated the Upper East Side.
One of the oldest photos of New York Ciy. It was taken somewhere near the Five Points. While that is technically not the Lower East Side, the buildings with their awnings are representative of the shopping areas of lower Manhattan at the time.
