In 1978 Exceller defeated Seattle Slew and Affirmed (both Triple Crown winners) in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. In 1978 he won 7 stakes races including the Jockey Club Gold Cup, the Hollywood Gold Cup and the Sunset Handicap. In 1997 he was nominated to the Horse Racing Hall of Fame. And by some horrible twist of fate, in 1997 Exceller was also slaughtered in a European slaughterhouse.
