FAMOUS LOUISVILLIANS: D.W. Griffith, film director. Griffith was born in Crestwood just a few miles east of Louisville, and his grave is in a churchyard nearby. I've seen it, though it is not listed in any tourist material. That's probably because, in addition to being the most acclaimed, famous and innovative director of early silent movies, he is also the most controversial, for the racial content of his magnum opus, The Birth of a Nation (1915).
