The complete Veil Nebula, or Cygnus Loop, is the result of a supernova that was visible on Earth about 10,000 years ago. In that time, it has expanded until it now covers over 5-times the apparent size of the full moon in Earth's sky. It is about 1,400 light years away. The individual sections have their own designations. For example, the wisp to the bottom of this image is known as NGC 6960 - the Witch's Broom Nebula. At the top is IC 1340.
