After reading or telling a story multiple times students should be able to retell the story. This will reflect their understanding of the important elements of the story and improve their summarizing skills. Students can be provided tools to assist them with retelling a story at first but gradually these tools should be removed, reflecting the students ability to retell the story without prompting. Anecdotal notes are a good assessment tool for retells as they allow you to capture details.
