European Art "'Slave Play' on a Sugar Plantation in Surinam" by Dirk Valkenburg is one of the National Gallery of Denmark’s masterpieces.

Working in sugar mills and on sugar plantations was incredibly hard work, and it often slashed the life expectancy of enslaved people dramatically. Based on harsh working conditions, deplorable living quarters, insufficient hours for rest and a variety of other factors, enslaved people who worked in the sugar mills were only expected to live for another eight years at most, according to materials provided by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at NYU.

Boudica (d. 60-61 C.E.) is a heroine of the Brythonic Celtic Iceni people of Norfolk in Eastern Roman Brtitain. Upon the death of her husband Prasutagus (ca. 60 C.E.), the Romans annexed his kingdom then brutally stripped and beat her and raped her daughters, spurring her leadership. She led a major uprising of the Celtic tribes against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire. Her army killed an estimated 70,000-80,000 people. She was defeated at the Battle of Watling Street.
