August "Gus" Winkeler, a gangster who got his start in St. Louis with Egan's Rats, photographed in 1932. Winkeler grew up in Lemay and left St. Louis in 1926 after the Rats were broken up by criminal convictions. He moved to Chicago, becoming a lieutenant to gangster Al Capone. It is suspected that Winkeler took part in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre of seven of Capone's rivals. Winkeler was murdered on Oct. 9, 1933, in Chicago; he was 32. His murder never was solved. Vito "Don Vito" Genovese (Naples November 27 1897 – Springfield February 14 1969) was an Italian-born American mobster and crime boss who rose to power in America during the Castellammarese War to later become leader of the Genovese crime family. Genovese served as mentor to the future boss of the Genovese crime family Vincent "Chin" Gigante. He is buried in Saint John Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens.
