Dans les dernières années de la République, on fait largement appel à la sculpture en relief pour commémorer les événements historiques; l'apogée du bas-relief historique commence avec le règne d'Auguste et se poursuit pendant deux siècles. Cette forme d'art, nouvelle et typiquement romaine, sera un véhicule efficace de la propagande impériale.

A panoramic view of the scene decorating the celebrated Portland Vase. The exact significance of the scenes are not known but many scholars believe the vase to show scenes from the wedding of Peleus and Thetis from Greek mythology. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. (British Museum, London)
The ivory relief shows Achilles in his tent sulking, and refusing to fight the Trojans until the injustice done to him by Agamemnon is rectified ("Iliad" I). Achilles is on a couch or chair holding drapery up over his head. The leg of the furniture is in the form of a lion's foot. His sheathed sword hangs from his left hand, his helmet and cuirass are on the ground beside him, and his shield leans against a column. Walters Art Museum
