Trajan's wife was Pompeia Plotina, a woman known for an interest in philosophy, virtue, dignity and simplicity. Like Trajan, she was born in Spain. The couple had no children, and adopted Trajan's cousin, the future Emperor Hadrian, when he was a boy. When Plotina died, Hadrian, now emperor, deified her and built her a temple in Provence.
