Continental Rococo Oak Bookcase Bureau, 18th century, allover rocaille decorated, in three sections, the upper section with twelve drawers flanking a central door enclosing shelved interior, over medial section with fold-out writing surface and fitted interior flanked by two drawers, the serpentine breakfronted lower section with three long drawers, on outscrolled feet, approx. ht. 73 1/2, approx. wd. 53, dp. 24 1/2 in.

Cabinet made of oak, pine, walnut, cedar, ebony and rosewood with ivory and silver veneer, silver, silver-gilt moldings, gilded yellow-metal mounts and drawers lined with aquamarine-colored silk created by Melchior Baumgartner [Augsburg, Germany], c. 1655–59 (worked on 1825–50). The three central plaques inside the cabinet depict the Roman gods of agriculture (Ceres, at left), wine (Bacchus, at center), and love (Venus with Cupid, at right).
