Chinchorro mummies are the oldest mummies in the world (5,000-8,000 years old). These mummies are at the Museo Arqueológico y Antropológico de San Miguel de Azapa in northern Chile. Mummifying process: bodies were carefully defleshed and the skin, brain and internal organs removed; the bones were dried and then reassembled using twigs and reeds for reinforcement; skin was reapplied; a thick layer of ash paste was applied over the body; and a stylized clay mask used to cover the face.
