The Pitt Family of Encombe, 1758 & 1761 by William Hoare (British painter, ca.1707-1792). John Pitt of Encombe (1704-1787) came from a long line of Dorset & Berkshire gentry: although related to the Prime Minister William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, he was several generations removed. Marcia Pitt's informal gown with the hem of the skirt pinned up to the bosom to reveal the pale petticoat beneath is unusual and suggests the artist may be drawing attention to the sitter's pregnancy.
