Kara Walker, 38, makes black-paper silhouettes that at first glance might remind you of the antique portraits hanging in your grandmother’s living room. But look closer. You’ll see that Walker’s art is complicated by race, sex and the history of slavery in the plantation-era South.

Kara Walker: The Artist

Kara Walker is a contemporary African American artist and currently is a professor of visual arts in the MFA program at Columbia University. She is best known for her room-size tableaux of black cut-paper silhouettes.

Between studio visits with Mike Schmidt and Dave Klingaman this morning, I snapped some photos of cool life study work up on the walls in FA-4.  During my chats with Mike and Dave, I learned about the differences between the Figurative Track and Contemporary Track MFA programs in COTA, and what keeps these young artists inspired and working. Stay tuned next week for their STUDIO VISIT ARTIST SPOTLIGHTS. It should be a great week for INDEPENDENT STUDY.

Inspiring Photo realistic Oil Paintings by Artist Daniel Adel  (b.1962) who graduated from Dartmouth College in 1984 with a degree in Art History. He continued his studies at the National Academy of Design, and at the Hunter College MFA program in New York City. While developing his own work, his commissioned projects have been featured in the pages of The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and The New York Times, among others.

In 1976, Russian — then Soviet — artist Mikhail Belomlinsky took on the Tolkien classic shortly after graduating from an MFA program in painting, architecture, and sculpture. The opportunity kicked off Belomlinsky’s career as he turned to political cartooning and children’s books. He went on to illustrate more than 100 of the latter, both in Soviet Russia and in the United States after his move to New York City in 1989.
