彦根城は徳川四天王のひとりである井伊直政の子、直継によって築かれた城です。以降、多くの大老を輩出した譜代大名である井伊氏14代の居城として用いられました。現存12天守のひとつであり、天守は国宝です。幕末に起きた「桜田門外の変」で暗殺された大老、井伊直弼は藩主となるまでをこの城下で過ごしており、当時の屋敷は「埋木舎(うもれぎのや)」としていまも現存しています。JR彦根駅からも徒歩でいけるほど近く、訪問しやすい現存天守のひとつであり、また人気キャラ「ひこにゃん」でも有名な城です。
