Veronica Franco (1546-1591) is the most famous of the cortegiane oneste, or honored courtesans of Venice. After a marriage that ended for unknown reasons, both Veronica & her mom became courtesans. In the 1570s, she published her poems. In 1580 she published her personal letters, including one urging a woman not to encourage her daughter to take up prostitution. Franco never regretted her profession, but she acknowledged the many dangers of such a life, especially for low-class prostitutes.
