Bodh Gaya is where Buddha reached "perfect wisdom". He reached perfect enlightenment under a bo tree here, and this has diffused around the world. A temple has stood near the site since the third century B.C.
From 383 B.C. to first century C.E. the Second and Third Buddhist Councils are held,King Asoka and his son Mahinda reign, Buddhism reaches Central Asia and two important monasteries are formed later to become branches.
The Mahabodhi Temple-Bodhgaya. At This Place Prince Sidhartha maditated and obtained the Enlightenment. This is the main pilgrimage for Buddhists. Emperor Asoka is considered to be the founder of the Mahabodhi temple.
A buddhist place of worship is called a Vihara. They are constructed with bricks or rocks and usually have a hall for meeting in congregational prayer with a veranda on 3 sides and a courtyard. Worshippers sit on the floor barefoot facing an image of Buddha and chant.
